Resilient Roots

In‑Person Courses

Wilderness Skills & Resilience School.

Learn to survive & thrive - from past to present

Resilient Roots offers a small number of in‑person learning experiences each year, rooted in the Scottish Highlands, following the Resilient Roots "Tree of Needs" curriculum.

These courses explore how humans have survived in the wilds of Scotland through the ages - and how these same principles can teach us about resilience today in the modern world.

Whether you are new to woodland skills or on a longer path toward survival mastery, the training is designed to meet you at your current skill level and gently push your comfort zones at your own pace.

Group sizes are intentionally small (maximum 10 people), allowing learning to unfold through shared experience, practice, and conversation.

Woodland Immersion Days

(Day Course)

A practical introduction to the Resilient Roots learning journey.

A full day deep in the woodland teaching site- near Bunloit, Drumnadrochit (Scottish Highlands). These day experiences offer a grounded introduction to wilderness living skills, in a relaxed & friendly teaching environment, following the "Tree of Needs" learning map.

Day courses focus on learning the basic survival principles using the idea of the Resilient Rucksack - the core skills and knowledge humans have always carried with them to survive and adapt.

You will explore how people lived and survived in the wilds of Scotland in the past, and how those same foundations still apply to resilience today.

  • Reading natures signs, plant ID & foraging walk.

Woodland Living Weekends

(2 Day Course)

Experience living with the forest- past to present

Woodland Living Weekends offer a deeper immersion into the Resilient Roots learning journey.

These overnight courses blend practical survival skills with team work, reflection, and time living together in the woods.

The weekends explore how people lived with the forest in the past & how we can live in the woods today, using modern tools.

The overnight element is an opportunity to gently step outside your comfort zone if you wish. For example by sleeping in an improvised or more traditional shelter.

But there’s no pressure at all. You’re equally welcome to bring a tent and simply enjoy the experience.

These weekends are held as a digital detox. Phones are set aside so you can reclaim your attention, learn primal survival skills, reconnect with your body, the land, and the people around you, around a hearth with tasty food.

There are some set lessons, but a lot of the learning happens organically, so can be tailored to peoples interests.

These might include:

  • Implementing basic survival skills at your own camp (build a shelter, fire & cook food on it).

  • Learn how to live in the forest through shared team tasks like building shelters, fire & woodland management.

  • Campfire cooking, sharing tasty wholesome food around the fire.

  • Evenings of stories & music.

  • Mindful mornings, with meditation and light movement.

  • Staff martial-arts & archery.
